The Simplicity That Is in Christ

Updated: Jul 5

Why Religious Man Rejects the Gospel of Grace

"But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ."— 2 Corinthians 11:3

There has never been a greater battle fought than the battle over the Gospel.

From the Garden of Eden until this present hour, Satan's greatest objective has never been to make man irreligious. Rather, his masterpiece has been to corrupt the truth of God just enough that it appears believable while remaining spiritually fatal.

The Apostle Paul warned repeatedly that there would be "another gospel," "another Jesus," and "another spirit" (Galatians 1:6–9; 2 Corinthians 11:2–4). Those warnings are just as necessary today as when they were first written. Wherever the pure Gospel of the grace of God is preached, Satan immediately seeks to obscure it with religious tradition, human merit, emotional experience, or legal requirements. His methods may change, but his objective never does—to draw men away from the sufficiency of Jesus Christ.

The tragedy is that many sincere people spend their entire lives surrounded by religion without ever understanding the Gospel itself.

The Gospel God Declares

One of the remarkable features of Scripture is that God leaves us in no doubt as to what the Gospel is.

Paul writes:

"Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you... For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures." (1 Corinthians 15:1–4)

Notice what Paul does.

He does not define the Gospel as a religious experience.

He does not define it as reforming one's life.

He does not define it as church membership, baptism, speaking in tongues, or keeping the law.

He points us to one glorious historical reality: Jesus Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again the third day according to the Scriptures.

The Gospel is not good advice telling us what we must do for God.

It is good news declaring what God has already done for us through His Son.

The Simplicity of Saving Faith

Perhaps nowhere is the simplicity of salvation more clearly seen than in the Philippian jail.

The jailer cried out,

"Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" (Acts 16:30)

The answer came immediately:

"Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved..." (Acts 16:31)

How wonderfully simple.

Paul did not tell him to improve his life before coming to Christ.

He did not tell him to earn God's favor.

He did not instruct him to perform religious ceremonies or complete a list of requirements.

He pointed a condemned sinner to a sufficient Saviour.

That is still God's answer today.

Why Grace Offends Religious Man

If salvation is truly that simple, why do so many reject it?

The answer lies in the human heart.

Grace leaves no room for boasting.

It strips man of every imagined righteousness and brings him before God as a guilty sinner who has nothing to offer except faith in the finished work of Christ.

That is precisely why every false gospel adds something to grace.

Some require religious ceremonies.

Others require law-keeping.

Some make salvation depend upon perseverance, spiritual experiences, or human performance.

The forms differ, but the principle remains the same.

Whenever human merit is added to Christ's finished work, the Gospel has been corrupted.

Paul expressed this truth with unmistakable clarity:

"I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain." (Galatians 2:21)

If righteousness could be obtained by our works, then Calvary was unnecessary.

But Christ did die.

He died because there was no other way.

Christ Is Enough

The dying words of our Lord still echo through history:

"It is finished."

Those three words forever settled the question of redemption.

The debt was paid.

Justice was satisfied.

Sin was judged.

The work was completed.

Nothing can be added to a finished work.

The believer does not rest in his performance.

He rests in Christ.

He does not trust his faithfulness.

He trusts Christ's faithfulness.

He does not cling to his works.

He clings to the Cross.

The Christian life begins exactly where all human effort ends—at the feet of the crucified and risen Saviour.

A Personal Reflection

Many years ago, I came to the end of myself.

For the first time, I understood that I was not merely someone who had committed sins—I was a sinner by nature, guilty before a holy God and utterly unable to save myself.

All my religious efforts, good intentions, and imagined righteousness could never remove my guilt.

There was only one place left to look.

Jesus Christ.

In simple faith I entrusted myself to Him alone, believing that His death was for my sins and His resurrection secured my justification.

The burden that had weighed so heavily upon my heart was gone, replaced by a peace I had never known.

That peace did not come because I had become good enough.

It came because Christ was enough.

Come Unto Christ

Perhaps you have spent years trying to earn God's acceptance.

Perhaps you have trusted in religion, morality, or your own efforts.

Friend, salvation is not found in what you can do for Christ.

It is found in what Christ has already done for you.

The invitation still stands:

"Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28)

The Gospel remains gloriously simple.

Jesus Christ died for sinners.

He was buried.

He rose again the third day.

And God now offers eternal life freely to all who will believe on His Son.

As Augustus Toplady so beautifully wrote:

Nothing in my hand I bring,Simply to Thy cross I cling.

May we never allow our minds to be moved away from the simplicity that is in Christ.
