The sons of God

"And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day." Jude 6

I recently watched a Q&A session that was posted on YouTube by David Daniels. Now, I want to say that I have nothing but the utmost respect for Bro. Daniels and the work he is doing, both in terms of his study and research into the KJB issue, and his taking the reins of Chick Publications since the departure of Jack Chick.

However, and with that said, he commented on that YouTube video that the sons of God referred to in the Old Testament were the godly line of Seth. You can watch the video here:

To which I commented by simply posting 1 Corinthians 11:7-10, which states, "For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man. For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man. Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man. For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels." Drawing attention to the fact that a woman is admonished not to pray with her head uncovered (i.e., without long hair).

He (Bro. Daniels) responded by saying that, "People get dirty ideas in their mind and inject them into that verse. Only pre-loading 'angels mating with humans' or 'angels lusting after humans' can make this verse have that kind of prurient meaning.

Not a single clear verse warns against angels having relations with humans. Yet God clearly warns us about everything else. Pseudepigraphal books can stick Christians' minds into the gutter."

So in response to his comment, I then wrote:

No descendant of Adam was ever called a son of God until the New Testament. "Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is." 1 John 3:2. And this is clearly brought out by the use of the word "now."

However, in the Old Testament, we find that the "sons of God" presented themselves before God, and Satan came with them. It is clear from the context that this is in heaven. “Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.” Job 1:6.

Furthermore, it is telling that no Old Testament saint was ever referred to as a "son of God." Not even the beloved Daniel. In fact, God makes it a point to refer to Daniel as a "son of man." I mean, you would suppose that if this was the supposed "godly line of Seth" that God would have referred to at least one of them as a "son of God," but He didn't.

Here's a truth: a son of God is someone who bears God's image. Jesus, the Bible says, was the expressed image of God. "Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person..." Hebrews 1:3. And that only applies to those who do not have the fallen nature. This is evident in Job 1:6, where God makes a clear distinction between "the sons of God" and Satan. "...the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them." And this is why the Bible says in Genesis 5:3 that "...Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, and after his image; and called his name Seth". Notice that God makes clear in that verse that Seth is not a son of God; he is a son of Adam.

In the New Testament, when a person gets saved, their fallen nature is "quickened." This Paul makes clear in Ephesians 2:1, "And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;” It is this quickening of your fallen nature that brings you back into communion with God.

"All flesh is not the same flesh: but there is one kind of flesh of men, another flesh of beasts, another of fishes, and another of birds. There are also celestial bodies, and bodies terrestrial: but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another. There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars: for one star differeth from another star in glory. So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption: It is sown in dishonour; it is raised in glory: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power: It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body. And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit. Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual. The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven. As is the earthy, such are they also that are earthy: and as is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly. And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly." (1 Corinthians 15:39-49).

There are a lot of things we could unpack here, but the main thing is that "in Christ" we are restored to our original state before the fall. Now, we know that we will not fully bear the image of the heavenly till we enter heaven. But that doesn't negate the fact that once a person gets saved in this age of grace, they are given a new nature, and that nature once again bears the image of God. We, in a sense, become as Adam was. And just as Adam was a son of God, so are we in Christ Jesus our Lord.

John 1:12 "But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:"

Philippians 2:15 "That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;"

1 John 3:1 "Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not."

1 John 3:2 "Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is."
